Spring is Right Around the Corner: Chimney Checklist
It’s been a brutal winter for some of us in the country, but it’s almost over! Temps have warmed up, and the bees are out in some places, which means spring is nearly here.
And spring is a perfect time to address winter damage to your home, but one area people often overlook is the chimney. Masonry chimneys take a beating during winter, especially if you’ve used them as a primary heating source for months. Creosote buildup and cracks are a few problems you want to tackle before winter rolls around again.
Here are a few spring chimney maintenance tips you can do.
Schedule a Professional Chimney Inspection

The most important step in spring chimney maintenance is scheduling a professional inspection. A chimney professional will check for structural issues, creosote buildup, blockages, and damage caused by Mother Nature.
During winter, freezing temperatures and moisture can cause cracked bricks, deteriorated mortar joints, and liner damage. A professional inspection can catch these issues early before they turn into expensive repairs.
Experts typically recommend having your chimney inspected at least once a year, and spring is the perfect time because technicians aren’t as busy in the spring as they are in late fall/early winter when people are getting their fireplaces ready for heavy use.
Get Your Chimney Cleaned
If you used your fireplace regularly during the winter, creosote buildup is almost guaranteed. Creosote is a highly flammable byproduct of burning wood that sticks to the interior walls of the chimney.
Too much creosote can create a serious fire hazard.
Spring chimney cleaning removes this buildup along with soot and debris. Cleaning the chimney soon after winter use also prevents creosote odors from developing during humid summer months.
A professional chimney sweep will also check for obstructions such as bird nests, leaves, or branches during the cleaning.
Inspect the Chimney’s Exterior
Winter weather can be hard on masonry chimneys. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can cause bricks and mortar to deteriorate.
Walk around the outside of your house and check the chimney for signs of damage, like:
– Cracked or missing bricks
– Crumbling mortar joints
– Leaning or shifting chimney structure
– White stains (efflorescence) on the bricks
These issues can let moisture into the chimney, leading to worse deterioration over time. If you see any of these problems, call a chimney professional immediately to schedule repairs.
Check the Cap
Your chimney cap is a small but extremely important component. It prevents rain, animals, and debris from entering the chimney while still allowing smoke to escape.
Spring is a great time to check if the cap is still in good condition. Look for rust, loose fittings, or damage caused by wind or falling branches.
If your chimney doesn’t have a cap, consider installing one. Chimney caps help prevent moisture damage and keep animals like birds, raccoons, and squirrels from nesting inside the flue.
Look for Water Damage
Moisture is a serious threat to your chimney system. During winter, snow and ice seep into small cracks and expand when frozen, worsening the damage. Look for signs of water damage, such as damp spots on the walls near the fireplace, rust on the damper or firebox, musty odors from the fireplace, and loose or flaking bricks inside the firebox.
Address water damage promptly to prevent major structural damage and costly repairs.
Check the Damper
The chimney damper controls the airflow through the chimney. When it’s closed, it prevents drafts, critters, and debris from getting into the home.
Open and close the damper to ensure it moves smoothly and forms a tight seal when closed. If you have a tough time operating it, or if it’s rusted or damaged, call a pro to replace it.

Consider Waterproofing the Chimney
Lastly, spring is an excellent opportunity to apply a waterproofing sealant to your chimney’s masonry. Professional chimney waterproofing products are breathable, which prevents water penetration while allowing trapped moisture to escape.
